- You follow John Trenchard through the Dorset village of Moonfleet, where smugglers, churchyards, and hidden passages give the story a wonderfully shadowy texture. The prose is old-fashioned and occasionally melodramatic, but the bond between John and the brooding Elzevir Block gives this adventure real feeling beneath its treasure-hunt machinery.
- You have to like slow, moldering atmosphere for this one: a young architect sent to shore up a crumbling minster tower, an organist with theories, a lord whose coat of arms hides a question of blood. The arch never sleeps, someone warns, and Falkner makes you believe it.
