- A spoiled millionaire's kid gets fished out of the Atlantic by a Gloucester cod schooner, and Kipling just lets the work fix him: hauling lines, cleaning fish, learning to respect Disko Troop. Fair warning, it's thick with sailing jargon, but the salt air feels earned.
- These beg to be read aloud, with all those rolling refrains ("the great grey-green greasy Limpopo River") and Kipling calling you O Best Beloved. The Elephant's Child alone earns it.
- You get an orphan boy running errands for spies while also carrying a lama's begging bowl, and Kipling makes both halves feel real. The Grand Trunk Road chapters are the best part, all dust and pilgrims and gossip.
- Forget the singing bear; the real Baloo teaches Law, and the jungle here has actual menace, with Shere Khan circling Mowgli's village like a debt coming due. Between the Mowgli chapters you also get Rikki-tikki fighting cobras, which is somehow tenser than most thrillers.
