Sax Rohmer

- You’ll enjoy this if you can settle into Sax Rohmer’s lurid, old-fashioned prose: Dr. Robert Cairn investigates Egyptian sorcery that feels increasingly nasty and intimate, with atmosphere built from séances, grim discoveries, and forbidden lore. It’s melodramatic and occasionally creaky, but the occult menace has a wonderfully poisonous imagination.
- If you can stomach the ugly period racism baked into its very premise, this is pure breathless pulp: Nayland Smith and Petrie stumbling through fog, trapdoors, and poisonous centipedes, always three steps behind. Fun in short bursts, though the plot is basically one chase repeated.
