- You spend time with Theodore Gumbril drifting through postwar London, where dinner-table talk, sexual jealousy, and his absurdly padded “comfort trousers” all receive the same dry scrutiny. It’s clever, brittle, and more interested in exposing fashionable ideas than making you care about its people, so you’ll enjoy it most if sharp conversation is enough.
- You spend a languid weekend at Crome with Denis Stone, who is forever composing himself while sharper, stranger people, especially Mr Scogan, talk circles around him. It’s a dry, episodic country-house comedy, more interested in clever conversation and social absurdity than plot.
- You get a crowded, clever dinner-party world where Philip Quarles, Mark Rampion, and the viciously wounded Spandrell argue about art, sex, politics, and how to live. It’s talky and emotionally chilly at times, but its competing voices make you feel a whole society thinking itself apart.
- You settle into Mrs. Aldwinkle’s Italian villa, where artists and intellectuals perform sophistication while Calamy’s restlessness keeps puncturing the pose. The talk is witty, cerebral, and sometimes overripe, so you’ll enjoy it more for its social satire and prickly ideas than for a tidy story.
