- Kuprin gives you tenderness with a hard edge: Olesya brings desire up against superstition and social cruelty, while The Garnet Bracelet turns quiet, impossible love into something piercing. The melodrama can be thick, but his compassion for outsiders and bruised, lonely people feels remarkably genuine.
- If army life ever sounded romantic to you, watch young Romashov trudge through drills, debts, and a garrison town where everyone's slowly rotting, then fall for a woman far shrewder than he is. It's bleak and slow burning, but Kuprin's tenderness for his dreamy lieutenant stays with you.
- Fair warning, this is grim: life inside a brothel, told without melodrama or rescue fantasies. When the student Likhonin tries to save Liubka and discovers good intentions aren't enough, Kuprin is quietly devastating.
