Ambrose Bierce

- Bierce writes dread the way a coroner writes reports, dry and precise, which somehow makes an invisible creature flattening the grass in The Damned Thing far worse than any monster described in full. Short, strange stories, best read one or two at a time, preferably at night.
- Bierce writes war stories with a cold eye and a knife twist, and Owl Creek Bridge alone will rearrange how you think an ending can work. Grim, short, precise, no comfort offered.
- Bierce used verse the way he used the Devil's Dictionary, to bury enemies: California politicians, frauds, and bores get their epitaphs while still alive. Malicious, quotable, and best taken a few pages at a time.
- You’ll enjoy dipping into this rather than reading it straight through: Bierce turns words like “love,” “war,” and “politics” into tiny, beautifully sharpened traps. It’s funny, mean, and often startlingly modern, though some entries are dated or cruel enough to make you wince.
