Bertrand Russell

- Russell walks you through Marx, Bakunin, and the syndicalists so clearly you feel smarter by chapter two, then quietly picks holes in all of them. Written mid-war, it's calm and fair where you'd expect ranting; skip it if you want fire, read it if you want thinking.
- You get Bertrand Russell thinking through Bolshevism after actually visiting Soviet Russia and meeting Lenin, rather than treating it as an abstract theory. His observations of Moscow, factories, and revolutionary certainty make this a sharp, sometimes dated political essay, best read for its wary intelligence rather than its verdicts.
- Russell spends the first chapter wondering whether the table in front of him actually exists, and somehow makes that feel urgent rather than silly. It's short, clear, and slightly bracing, best read slowly, and the final chapter on why philosophy matters at all really lands.
