- You get brisk Nancy Drew, with Nancy relying on observation rather than luck as she untangles the secrets around an isolated bungalow. It’s atmospheric without being dark, and Bess and George add the familiar warmth, though the mystery moves in the tidy, old-fashioned way these early books do.
- Nancy Drew at her most fun, honestly. A supposedly haunted old mansion, sliding panels, and Nancy calmly poking every wall while everyone else panics.
- You get Nancy Drew in a particularly appealing setting here: an old-fashioned inn, uneasy guests, and clues that turn up in places adults have overlooked. The mystery has that satisfying early-Nancy rhythm, with Nancy calmly noticing what everyone else dismisses, though the plot is more cozy than genuinely tense.
- You’ll like Nancy’s brisk, capable presence, especially as she helps the unfairly dispossessed Turner sisters hunt for a missing will hidden in an old clock. It’s an old-fashioned mystery, straightforward rather than psychologically deep, but the clues and Nancy’s persistence make it pleasantly easy to settle into.
