- Nothing much happens: Miriam teaches at a shabby North London school, reads novels late at night, feels trapped and alive by turns. But Richardson puts you so far inside her head that a bus ride or a gaslit classroom feels enormous.
- You spend time inside Miriam Henderson’s alert, restless mind as she circles questions of love, work, faith, and independence, often through long conversations that refuse neat conclusions. Deadlock is slow and inward, but its social observations and Miriam’s prickly honesty reward you if you enjoy books where thinking itself becomes the drama.
- Almost nothing happens, and that's the point. You live inside Miriam's head as she moves through the Corries' plush country house, noticing lamplight, dinner talk, her own restlessness.
- You spend time inside Miriam Henderson’s alert, unsettled consciousness, where a walk, a conversation, or a room can open into pages of thought. It’s slow, inward, and sometimes demanding, but rewarding if you like fiction that notices how a woman makes a self out of ordinary days.
- You’ll like this if you’re willing to settle into Miriam Henderson’s inward, impressionistic way of seeing: the German boarding school emerges through half-heard conversations, awkward lessons, homesickness, and sudden flashes of feeling. It’s quiet and sometimes elusive, but its attention to a young woman becoming herself feels remarkably intimate.
- You settle into Miriam Henderson’s days at a London dental practice, where ordinary conversations keep opening into sharp, restless thoughts about work, sex, faith, and independence. The pace is patient and inward, but if you like noticing a mind change in real time, its quiet strangeness stays with you.
