- You get a strange, moving blend of funeral grief and comedy, especially when Heracles keeps feasting in Admetus’s house without realizing what has happened. Alcestis’s sacrifice also leaves you arguing with the play about love, duty, and whether Admetus deserves such devotion.
- You get a revenge tragedy that keeps scraping away the glamour: Electra lives in humiliating poverty, Orestes is anything but a clean-cut savior, and even their reunion feels strained. It’s bleak, bitterly funny in places, and genuinely uncomfortable about what justice does to people.
- You get Hecuba at her most human here, grieving Polyxena while the Greek victors treat suffering as routine. The play is bleak and morally unsettling, but its sharp reversals and refusal to make revenge feel clean stay with you.
- You get a painfully human tragedy out of Phaedra’s attempt to live honorably while desire and divine spite close in around her. Hippolytus is austere, self-righteous, and oddly moving, and the play’s argument between Aphrodite and Artemis leaves you thinking about purity, shame, and who gets punished for wanting.
- You get a strange, humane Euripides here: Iphigenia, long believed sacrificed at Aulis, now serves as a priestess in Tauris and quietly plots around its brutal rituals. The play feels more like a tense escape tale than a full tragedy, with sharp questions about home, guilt, and recognition.
- You watch Medea turn her intelligence and rhetorical skill against a city that has already decided she is disposable. The Nurse’s fearful opening and the Chorus’s uneasy sympathy make the play feel intimate, tense, and morally uncomfortable, not like a tidy revenge story.
- You get a short, strange burst of Trojan-war drama: Hector’s exhausted night watch, Dolon’s ridiculous wolf-skin disguise, and a raid that feels almost like a nightmare before dawn. It’s less psychologically rich than Euripides’ darker plays, but its speed and eerie battlefield atmosphere make it a worthwhile oddity.
- You watch Hecuba, Cassandra, and Andromache endure the aftermath of Troy’s fall, and the play’s spare, ritual grief keeps tightening around you. It’s bleak and sometimes deliberately static, but its pity feels startlingly clear-eyed, especially when the victors’ language turns cruelly casual.
