- Paul Pennyfeather gets expelled from Oxford for something other people did, then drifts through a dreadful Welsh boarding school, high society, and worse, all narrated with a straight face. If you like your comedy dry and slightly heartless, Captain Grimes alone is worth the price.
- You get Waugh’s brittle, funny view of 1920s party people through Adam Fenwick-Symes, whose attempts to marry Nina keep colliding with money, gossip, and sheer social absurdity. It moves in sharp little scenes and gradually feels darker, so you’ll like it more for its acid comedy than its warmth.
