- You get a sharper, stranger book than the film suggests: the forest feels beautiful and perilous, and Bambi’s encounters with the old stag and the hunters give his growing independence real weight. It’s quiet, observant, and occasionally bleak, best read slowly rather than as a children’s adventure.
