- You follow Sara Crewe from a privileged life into a miserable attic, where her storytelling and stubborn kindness keep her spirit intact. It’s unabashedly sentimental, but the schoolroom cruelty and Sara’s imaginative games give it real emotional weight, especially if you like stories about dignity under pressure.
- You’ll like Cedric for his openhearted decency, especially as it unsettles his grim, aristocratic grandfather. It’s unabashedly sentimental and sometimes sugary, but the warmth feels earned, and the old-fashioned kindness gives the story more bite than its velvet suits suggest.
- Mary Lennox starts out genuinely unpleasant, sour and rude, and watching her thaw as she digs in the dirt with Dickon and his tame animals is what makes it work. Slow and gentle, more about weather and growing things than plot, and lovely for exactly that reason.
