- You read it for George Arthur Rose, a failed Englishman whose furious self-regard somehow becomes a papal vision of reform, revenge, and magnificent ceremony. Rolfe’s prose is ornate, funny, and prickly, an acquired taste, but if you enjoy literary eccentrics and elaborate wish-fulfilment, it stays gloriously strange.
