- If you like watching a detective actually work, checking tickets, timing train journeys, quietly mulling things over with his wife at home, French chasing a robbed safe full of diamonds from Hatton Garden across half of Europe is very satisfying. Skip it if you need fireworks.
- Crofts is the patient, methodical type, and here Inspector French earns everything through plain legwork after a frightened cinema girl named Thurza Darke brings him a strange story and then turns up drowned. If you like watching a case built brick by brick, this scratches that itch nicely.
- You get a wonderfully methodical early police procedural, with Inspector French tracing a human body packed into a cask through shipping records, witnesses, and shifting alibis. It takes its time and occasionally feels procedural in the old-fashioned sense, but the patient reconstruction is quietly satisfying.
- Fun one if you like watching an amateur get in over his head: Maxwell Cheyne gets drugged at lunch, burgled, kidnapped, and keeps blundering after the gang anyway before French arrives to do it properly. Lighter and more adventure-flavored than Crofts's usual patient timetable-checking, honestly.
- If you enjoy watching a puzzle get worked out with patience (ferry timetables, cargo manifests, a lorry whose number plate keeps changing in the Bordeaux pine woods), this scratches that itch nicely. Fair warning, Crofts writes like an engineer, so come for the machinery, not the prose.
- If you like watching a detective grind through train timetables and boat trips until an alibi cracks, Inspector Tanner checking every minute around Sir William's drowning is oddly soothing. Slow and methodical on purpose, so skip it if you need flash over patience.
- If you like watching a puzzle solved properly, this is a quiet pleasure: a crate hauled out of a Welsh estuary with a body inside, and Inspector French patiently tracing it backward, step by careful step. Slow by design, so skip it if you need thrills.
- If you like watching a detective actually work, French tracing one supposedly burnt banknote back through banks and shops until a whole fraud unravels, this is very satisfying. It's patient, methodical stuff, so skip it if you want thrills over careful, honest legwork.
