Fyodor Sologub

- Fair warning, these stories are dark: shadow puppets that swallow a boy's sanity, children and death circling each other in nearly every tale. But if you like your fairy tales strange and melancholy, Sologub writes them with an eerie tenderness nobody else quite manages.
- Strange one, this: Trirodov's estate with its silent, spectral children sits right next to the riots and police of 1905 Russia, and Sologub refuses to pick between dream and history. If you like your fantasy uneasy and half-lit rather than tidy, it lingers.
- If you enjoy watching a truly petty man rot from the inside, Peredonov is your guy: a paranoid schoolteacher who smears wallpaper out of spite while a little grey creature only he can see skitters in the corners. Nasty, funny, genuinely unsettling, and not for a gloomy week.
