- Bernard starts out half feral, raised by bandit uncles in a crumbling castle, and Edmée basically refuses to love him until he makes himself worth loving, which takes years. If you like romance that's really about a person slowly being rebuilt, this is unusually satisfying.
- You get a gentle, quietly radical pastoral in which the widower Germain walks through the countryside with his little son, Petit-Pierre, and finds his ideas about marriage and respectability shifting. The pace is unhurried and the sentiment plainspoken, but the tenderness toward working people feels remarkably alive.
