- You spend the whole book watching Georges Duroy charm and scheme his way up through Paris newspapers and other men's wives, and the sly trick is you half root for him anyway. Cold, funny, cynical about ambition, best if you don't need a likable hero.
- You’ll appreciate how quietly this family drama turns an ordinary inheritance into a crisis of jealousy, shame, and identity. Pierre’s restless suspicion and Jean’s calmer self-possession make the novel feel psychologically sharp, though its cool, measured pace suits you better than melodrama.
- Maupassant does in ten pages what most writers need three hundred for, and he's not gentle about it: The Necklace alone will sting you for days. Fair warning, he's cynical about almost everyone, but if you like your irony dry and your endings sharp, he's your man.
