H. P. Lovecraft

- Dyer's dry, scientific voice makes it work, a geologist calmly cataloguing rock strata while his dread quietly climbs, until an ancient city under the Antarctic ice stops feeling theoretical. Slow and detail-heavy on purpose, so come patient; the payoff is real cosmic vertigo.
- Fair warning, the prose is overstuffed and the man's prejudices leak through, but nobody does creeping cosmic dread like this. Start with The Colour Out of Space, where something falls on a farm and slowly wrongs everything, and see if that particular chill works on you.
- You get a slow, claustrophobic descent into family history, antiquarian obsession, and forbidden experiments, with Dr. Willett piecing together what happened to Charles Dexter Ward. Lovecraft’s prose can be stiff and purple, but the old letters, graveyard lore, and mounting sense of corruption make it rewarding if you like horror that creeps rather than lunges.
