Hjalmar Söderberg

- Nothing much happens, and that's the point: Martin drifts from childhood faith into a desk job and a love he can't afford to marry, all in that hushed Stockholm twilight Söderberg does so well. Read it slowly, when you're in a wistful mood anyway.
- Soderberg's stories are small, ironic, and quietly devastating; in The Fur Coat a borrowed coat undoes a marriage's illusions in five pages. Stockholm melancholy in exact doses, best read a few at a time.
