J.-K. Huysmans

- You spend time with Des Esseintes as he retreats from ordinary life into perfumes, jewels, books, and increasingly elaborate private experiments. It’s strange, static, and sometimes gloriously overripe, but if you enjoy ornate sentences and a mind turning its own tastes into a prison, you’ll find plenty to linger over.
- You follow Durtal through a grimy, feverish Paris as he investigates Gilles de Rais and the world of modern Satanism, while his own disgust and curiosity keep tangling together. It’s strange, talkative, and occasionally sluggish, but the black-mass atmosphere and Huysmans’s decadent, unnerved prose stay with you.
