- The prose literally grows up with Stephen, from baby talk to feverish theology, and the hellfire sermon in the middle will scare you even if you've never been Catholic. Slow going in spots, but if you like watching a mind assemble itself, this is that.
- Nothing much happens in these stories, and that's the point: small humiliations, missed chances, whole lives caught in a glance. If you can sit with quiet sadness, the last one, with Gabriel at the party and snow falling over Ireland, will stay with you for years.
- Joyce's one play, and it's all talk, three people circling the question of whether love can survive total freedom, with Richard almost daring his partner Bertha toward another man. Slow and cerebral in the Ibsen mold, but if you like watching jealousy dissected honestly, it stings.
- Chamber Music is Joyce before Joyce: small songlike lyrics, almost Elizabethan, that composers set almost immediately; Pomes Penyeach adds sadder, stranger notes. Minor beside Ulysses, but hearing him work in miniature recalibrates the rest.
- You’re glad you read it for the strange intimacy of spending a day inside Leopold Bloom’s mind, where errands, advertisements, hunger, and memory keep turning unexpectedly funny and tender. It’s demanding and occasionally maddening, but the jokes, wordplay, and Molly Bloom’s closing monologue reward patience.
