John Buchan

- If you liked following Richard Hannay before, this one sends him across wartime Germany toward Constantinople chasing a rumor of a prophet, with the dyspeptic American Blenkiron stealing half the scenes. Pure boyish adventure, cheerfully implausible in places, and showing its 1916 attitudes now and then.
- A retired Glasgow grocer takes a walking holiday and stumbles into rescuing a Russian princess, backed by a gang of scrappy slum kids called the Gorbals Die-Hards. It's a gentler, funnier Buchan than the Hannay books, and Dickson McCunn's reluctant middle-aged courage is oddly touching.
- Slower and stranger than his thrillers, and better for it: a Jacobite agent crossing England during the Forty-five keeps slipping into an older, hidden country that Midwinter's people move through. A gawky young Sam Johnson turns up too.
- You get Richard Hannay undercover as a conscientious objector, which lets Buchan play slyly with patriotism, conscience, and the absurdities of wartime Britain. It’s more reflective and morally uneasy than a straight chase story, but Hannay’s dry voice and Mary Lamington’s intelligence keep the long stretches moving.
- Sandy Arbuthnot runs a guerrilla campaign in an invented South American republic against a dictator who traffics in minds as much as copper. Long for a Buchan, more war than chase, but the mountain campaigning is done with real care.
- A quick one, an evening's read, and the best scene is just two men talking over dinner, where Lumley calmly explains how thin the crust of civilization really is and Leithen's blood runs cold. The danger stays in ordinary London streets, which somehow makes it worse.
- Richard Hannay finds a dead spy in his flat and spends the rest of the book bolting across Scottish moors in borrowed clothes, and honestly that's the whole appeal. It's short, brisk, and cheerfully implausible, perfect for a rainy afternoon when you want pace over depth.
- You get a more tired, thoughtful Richard Hannay here, moving through a postwar Europe where political idealism shades into manipulation. His decision to pose as a shell-shocked man gives the adventure an eerie psychological edge, though the pace is more deliberate than in The Thirty-Nine Steps.
