John Dewey

- Dewey's prose is dry, no way around it, but his central idea (that education is growth itself, not preparation for some later life) will quietly rearrange how you think about school, work, even conversation. Read it slowly, arguing with him in the margins; that's the point.
- Dewey argues that morality lives in habits, not willpower, and once that clicks you start noticing it everywhere in your own day. Fair warning, it reads like patient lectures, not stories, so bring some coffee, but he's surprisingly plainspoken for a philosopher and oddly comforting.
- You find a bracing, sometimes dense account of how a public disappears when people cannot see the consequences of institutional decisions, and why communication is the heart of democracy. Dewey’s argument with Walter Lippmann remains useful, though the philosophical passages make you slow down.
