John G. Neihardt

- You get a long, incantatory poem about the American West, from Hugh Glass’s ordeal to the violence that follows the Ghost Dance. Neihardt writes in a grand, old-fashioned voice, but the best passages make landscape and catastrophe feel inseparable, especially when Native lives push back against the settlers’ legend.
