- You get a clear-eyed, often surprisingly modern argument that character matters more than stuffing a child’s head with lessons. Locke’s advice on cold baths, exercise, reading, and self-command can feel rigid, but his close attention to habit and the child’s mind makes this thoughtful, practical reading.
- Fair warning, the First Treatise is Locke patiently dismantling a divine-right argument nobody holds anymore, so most people skim it. But the Second, where he builds government from consent, property, and the right to toss out bad rulers, still feels startlingly alive when you slow down for it.
