- Chopin can turn a whole life inside out in three pages, like the wife in The Story of an Hour who learns of her husband's death and feels something she can't admit. Quiet, sharp Louisiana stories about women wanting more, best read slowly, a few at a time.
- You’ll appreciate how quietly radical Edna Pontellier’s awakening feels, less like a grand rebellion than a growing refusal to keep performing the life expected of her. The Gulf, the bluegrass music, and Mademoiselle Reisz’s piano give the novel a sensual, restless texture, though its emotional coolness can take a little patience.
