Leonid Andreyev

- You get a strange, theatrical sadness in He, a disgraced man who turns humiliation into a circus act, and in Consuelo, whose warmth never quite escapes the play’s shadows. It’s melodramatic and deliberately artificial, but if you like tragic stories with masks, applause, and bruised dignity, it lingers.
- Satan takes over the body of an American millionaire to have some fun with humanity, and the joke turns on him: people out-devil the devil at every step. It's bitter, sardonic stuff, Andreyev's last book, and if you like your satire bleak it lands hard.
- Fair warning, Andreyev goes to dark places and stays there: Lazarus comes back from the grave and his stare hollows out everyone who meets it, condemned prisoners count down their last night. But if you can take that bleakness, he writes dread with a strange, almost tender precision.
