Lewis Mumford

- Mumford reads American buildings like a diary, finding whole moods in a New England meetinghouse or the marble bluster of the Gilded Age. It's opinionated cultural history more than architecture textbook, so come for the argument; you'll walk your own town differently afterward.
- You’ll like this if you enjoy ideas being tested against real life: Mumford moves from Plato and More to Bellamy and Morris, asking what each imagined society gets right and what it forgets about human desire. It’s earnest and occasionally dated, but it makes utopian thinking feel practical rather than escapist.
