- Quiet, melancholy, and honest about what it costs just to keep going: Rutherford grinds through hack journalism in London, tries with his friend M'Kay to do some small good among the Drury Lane poor, and settles for modest, hard-won peace. If you want incident, skip it; if you've ever needed permission to live a small life well, it helps.
- You get a quiet, candid record of a young Nonconformist mind losing its grip on inherited religious certainty. The chapel scenes and inward arguments are more searching than dramatic, so it suits you when you’re in the mood for patient, melancholy reflection rather than a busy plot.
- Half of it follows Zachariah, a Radical printer stuck in a loveless marriage and drifting into conspiracy after Waterloo, then it jumps a generation to chapel squabbles in a small town. The break is jarring, but Hale White's honesty about faith and unhappy marriage cuts deep.
