Matthew Arnold

- You get a sharp, surprisingly funny argument about English complacency, as Arnold skewers “Philistines” and “Barbarians” while searching for “sweetness and light.” The prose is dense and sometimes preachy, but it rewards you with a lively way to think about education, culture, and the public temper.
- You get Arnold’s cool, lucid melancholy here, especially in “Dover Beach,” where private love meets a world losing its faith, and in “The Scholar-Gipsy,” which moves with a patient, haunting sadness. The poems can feel formal, but their unease keeps speaking plainly.
