- You get Hawthorne’s sharp, uneasy view of a reformist commune through Miles Coverdale, whose amused detachment keeps turning into jealousy and self-knowledge. Zenobia’s force, Priscilla’s vulnerability, and the strange presence of Westervelt make it moody and sometimes slow, but rewarding if you like moral ambiguity more than tidy idealism.
- Fair warning, this one moves at the pace of dust settling, but poor proud Hepzibah nerving herself to open a penny shop in her cursed old family house is oddly touching, and Hawthorne's gloomy humor sneaks up on you. Best read slow, on autumn evenings.
- You watch Hester Prynne carry the scarlet A through a judgmental Puritan town, while Dimmesdale’s private guilt grows more painful than any public punishment. The prose is solemn and old-fashioned, but its sympathy for Hester, and its sharp sense of hypocrisy, make the slow reading worthwhile.
