- One of the gentler Thorndykes: a young doctor finds a body in a Highgate pond and gets pulled into the dead man's wax-modelling workshop, where a quiet romance blooms alongside the sleuthing. If you like your detection patient and scientific rather than flashy, this is comfortable company.
- A detective story where the pleasure is watching Thorndyke reason, coolly and fairly, about a vanished Egyptologist, a tangled will, and bones turning up in watercress beds. It moves at an Edwardian amble, with a sweet courtship folded in, so come patient and you'll be rewarded.
- You’ll like watching Dr. Thorndyke turn the odd physical details at 31 New Inn into evidence, with Freeman’s patient, almost laboratory-like reasoning doing the heavy lifting. It’s methodical rather than breathless, so it suits you when a mystery’s pleasure lies in thinking alongside the investigator.
- You get Dr Thorndyke at his most methodical, examining the peculiar red thumbmark through fingerprints, chemistry, and patient laboratory work rather than theatrical hunches. It’s an early, somewhat leisurely detective novel, but the careful forensic texture feels rewarding if you like seeing an investigation built piece by piece.
