- You settle into John Ridd’s sturdy, plainspoken view of Exmoor, where family loyalties, wild landscapes, and the Doones’ violence make romance feel hard-won. It’s leisurely and melodramatic, with old-fashioned prose, but the moorland atmosphere and John’s stubborn decency stay with you.
- An old Welsh fisherman narrates, salty and self-serving, the story of a little girl washed ashore from a wreck and who she might be. Blackmore preferred this to Lorna Doone; it moves slower, but Davy's voice carries the whole book.
