Richard Jefferies

- You get a strangely beautiful, slow-blooming post-apocalyptic England, where forests swallow roads and rivers run wild after civilization vanishes. The later story follows Felix and Aurora through a harsher, more conventional adventure, so read it for Jefferies’s eerie landscape-writing as much as the uneven plot.
- You’d like this for its close, almost hypnotic attention to country life: Amaryllis and the Iden family move through farm work, village talk, and the fair while the Wiltshire landscape seems to breathe around them. It’s slow and episodic, but richly observed, especially if you enjoy rural novels more atmospheric than plot-driven.
- Honestly, the love triangle (two friends courting Margaret Estcourt) is slight, and Jefferies knows it. You read this for the Wiltshire downs, the haymaking, the church bells, a whole countryside breathing on the page.
- Felise loves a preoccupied man across one drenched summer, and Jefferies pours his whole pagan feeling for downland, heat, and water into her. Barely a plot, honestly; you read it to be outdoors while indoors.
- Early Jefferies, long before the nature essays: a huge tangled inheritance fight over the land an industrial city stands on, murder included. Read it as a plotty Victorian curiosity from a writer who later became something much stranger.
