- You get a close, unvarnished look at a young American’s passage from civilian life into the French trenches, with shellfire, mud, bad food, and long stretches of waiting all treated as part of the job. It reads like a plainly told wartime memoir, more valuable for its everyday detail than for polished storytelling.
