- You get Philo Vance at his most polished and irritating, treating murder as an exercise in psychology while Markham fumes beside him. The Benson case moves through Manhattan drawing rooms and suspicious alibis, with a deliberately leisurely, puzzle-box feel that suits you if you enjoy deduction more than urgency.
- Philo Vance solves this one partly by watching suspects play poker, which tells you the fun here is pure deduction, not thrills. He's insufferable, all art lectures and dropped g's, but if you enjoy a smug detective circling a strangled showgirl's locked apartment, it clicks nicely.
- You’ll like this if you enjoy an old-fashioned puzzle where Philo Vance studies the Greene family’s nerves and grudges as carefully as the physical clues. It’s claustrophobic and pleasantly over-explained, with Vance’s polished, sometimes smug intelligence carrying you through a household where everyone seems compromised.
