Theodore Dreiser

- Dreiser writes like a man laying bricks, slow and heavy, but you end up inside Clyde Griffiths's head so completely that his weakness starts to feel like your own. If you can sit with dread building over hundreds of pages, this one stays with you for years.
- Dreiser writes flat and unhurried, but watching Hurstwood come apart, from swanky Chicago bar manager to a man counting pennies in New York, gets under your skin like almost nothing else. Carrie's rise is quieter and stranger.
- Frank Cowperwood watching a lobster slowly devour a squid as a boy tells you everything about how he'll run Philadelphia's money later. Dreiser writes flat and detailed, almost like a ledger, but if cold ambition fascinates you more than likable heroes, this gets under your skin.
- You get a fascinating, unsentimental look at Frank Cowperwood building power in Chicago, where streetcars, money, and social standing matter as much as affection. It’s deliberate and often morally chilly, but Dreiser makes Cowperwood’s appetite for possession and control oddly compelling, especially as it strains his relationships.
