Theodore Roosevelt

- Roosevelt narrates his own life the way he lived it, at full gallop, from a sickly boy building himself up with boxing lessons to ranching in the Dakota Badlands to the White House. Fair warning, he moralizes constantly and skips the painful parts, but the energy is real.
- Roosevelt narrates his own charge up Kettle Hill with zero false modesty, and that swagger is half the fun; you get cowboys bunking with Harvard polo players, mule chaos, fever camps, all told at a gallop. If self-congratulating men annoy you, though, skip it.
- Roosevelt cataloguing birds and piranhas is pleasant enough, but the book turns quietly harrowing once the River of Doubt starts eating canoes and he's running a fever, still writing calmly. If you like old expedition accounts with real teeth, this earns its slow stretches.
