- You’ll like this if you enjoy Mann’s domestic side: he turns walks with Bashan, his unruly dog, into sly self-portraiture, full of social observation and mock-serious reflection. It’s gentle, funny, and deliberately meandering, more companionable than dramatic.
- You get a detailed family portrait, funny in its social awkwardness and quietly devastating as the Buddenbrooks’ merchant confidence thins out. Tony’s stubborn self-dramatizing, Christian’s nervous theatricality, and Hanno’s musical sensitivity reward the long, patient reading, though the deliberate pace asks for room.
- You watch Gustav von Aschenbach, a disciplined writer who prides himself on self-control, unravel during a stay in Venice, where his fixation on the beautiful boy Tadzio turns the prose feverish and unsettling. It’s short, elegant, and deliberately uncomfortable rather than comforting.
- Hans Castorp goes up to a Davos sanatorium for three weeks and stays seven years, and somehow you feel time warp right along with him. It's slow and talky (Settembrini's arguments go on for pages), but if you like ideas as drama, it rewards patience.
