Ulysses S. Grant

- You get an unusually plainspoken account of the Civil War, with Grant explaining Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Appomattox in a cool, practical voice rather than polishing himself into a hero. The battle movements can slow you down, but his honesty, dry judgment, and refusal to settle old scores make the book feel remarkably close at hand.
