Virgil

- You get a hero who keeps moving because duty leaves him little choice, even when it means abandoning Dido and descending into the underworld to face what comes next. The poetry can feel formal and deliberate, but its mix of grandeur, grief, and political unease stays with you.
- These are quiet poems, shepherds trading songs while real grief hums underneath, like Meliboeus losing his farm while Tityrus lounges in the shade. If you can slow down enough, the melancholy under all that green is lovely; if you need plot, skip it.
- Slow reading, sure, but Virgil makes bees feel like a tiny doomed empire and a plague among cattle genuinely heartbreaking, and the Orpheus story tucked into the end catches you off guard. Good for anyone who likes their nature writing shadowed by grief and civil war.
