W. E. B. Du Bois

- Half political manifesto, half swooning romance, and Du Bois doesn't apologize for either. You follow Matthew Towns from a Berlin café where he meets an Indian princess into Pullman cars and Chicago machine politics, and the earnestness is the point.
- You move from the sharp, unsettling essay “The Souls of White Folk” to the speculative story “The Comet,” with poems and autobiography in between. It can feel uneven and fiercely argued, but you come away seeing race, empire, and gender through a mind that refuses easy comfort.
- You’ll appreciate how Du Bois turns a cotton-growing story into an argument about land, labor, and Black self-determination, without losing sight of Zora and Bles Alwyn as complicated people. The romance can feel schematic, but the novel’s anger, social vision, and sharp look at exploitation still give it real weight.
- Du Bois writes like a scholar who refuses to hide his heart, and the chapter on his infant son's death will stop you cold. Some essays are dense with history and argument, but his idea of living behind the Veil stays with you for years.
