- Spy work here is mostly waiting rooms, train journeys, and awkward small talk with people you might have to betray, and Maugham makes that quietly devastating. If you want gadgets and chases, skip it; if you like dry irony and the Hairless Mexican, you're set.
- Maugham is at his cattiest here, skewering the literary racket through the eager, social-climbing Alroy Kear, but what stays with you is Rosie, warm and unapologetic and impossible to judge. If you like your wit dry and your affection real underneath it, this delivers both.
- You settle into Philip Carey’s long, awkward education in work, love, and self-respect, with his clubfoot and restless intelligence making every choice feel personal. Mildred is infuriatingly real, and Maugham’s plain, unsentimental voice rewards patience with a sharp understanding of why people cling to what hurts them.
- You read this as a string of sharp, compact encounters rather than a conventional travel book: river journeys, shabby hotels, missionaries, officials, and Chinese strangers pass before Maugham’s amused eye. It’s observant and often funny, though its colonial assumptions can make the distance uncomfortable.
- Early Maugham slumming it in gothic horror, and it's fun: Oliver Haddo is a bloated, sneering occultist modeled on Aleister Crowley, and watching him slowly pull Margaret away from her sensible fiancé gets genuinely creepy. Pulpier than his later stuff, so come for atmosphere, not subtlety.
- You get a sharply observed, unsettling portrait of Charles Strickland, a respectable London broker who abandons comfort to paint, and of the people damaged by his single-mindedness. Maugham’s narrator keeps the prose cool and conversational, so the book quietly forces you to ask whether artistic conviction excuses cruelty.
- You get Maugham’s cool, unsentimental look at Kitty Fane, whose vanity and restlessness gradually meet the human cost of a cholera epidemic in colonial China. It’s emotionally severe rather than cozy, but the shifts in Kitty and Walter stay with you because neither is reduced to a type.
