- Early Collins, before he learned restraint, and honestly that's the fun: a young man secretly marries a shopkeeper's daughter he saw once on an omnibus, and everything curdles from there. If you like your Victorian melodrama feverish and a bit unhinged, this scratches that itch.
- Collins is angry in this one, at marriage laws that could trap a woman on a technicality, and at brawny athlete-worship, and the anger drives it. Anne Silvester's plight genuinely tightens your chest, though you'll have to forgive him a few sermons along the way.
- Magdalen Vanstone loses her whole inheritance on a legal technicality and decides to scheme it back, disguises and sham marriage included, and you spend the whole book rooting for someone doing genuinely dubious things. Captain Wragge, her con-artist accomplice, nearly steals it.
- Early Collins, so the machinery creaks a bit and you'll likely guess the secret before Rosamond does, but that's not really the point. You read it for poor trembling Sarah Leeson, for Uncle Joseph and his little Mozart music box, and for that sealed-up Myrtle Room pulling everyone toward it.
- You get a wonderfully odd Gothic mystery, with the cold, watchful Countess Narona at its center and a London hotel haunted by Lord Montbarry’s death in Venice. It’s melodramatic and occasionally strange, but the creeping rooms, hidden motives, and Collins’s relish for sensation make it easy to settle into.
- Valeria finds out her new husband was once tried for poisoning his first wife, verdict Not Proven, and decides to solve it herself when everyone tells her to drop it. She's stubborn in a way that's genuinely satisfying, and wait until you meet Miserrimus Dexter.
- You get the whole mystery told by different narrators who keep giving themselves away, and Betteredge, the old butler who treats Robinson Crusoe like scripture, is worth the price alone. It's long and takes its time, but the puzzle itself plays completely fair with you.
- You get Count Fosco, a villain so charming you catch yourself liking him, and Marian Halcombe, who's braver than any of the men. It's long and Victorian, sure, but the moonlit road meeting hooks you early and the plotting stays sharp all the way through.
