William James

- James is arguing philosophy here, against Hegel and the tidy all-in-one Absolute, but he does it like a good talker at dinner, funny and generous, even making Fechner's earth-soul sound plausible. Slower going than his psychology, worth it if you like watching a mind think out loud.
- James lectures like he's leaning across the table at you, opening with a squabble about a squirrel circling a tree to show how most philosophical fights dissolve once you ask what difference the answer makes. Dense in spots, but warmer and funnier than philosophy has any right to be.
- You get a humane, psychologically curious look at conversion, prayer, mysticism, and doubt, grounded in the testimonies of actual people rather than tidy doctrine. James’s lecture style can feel dense, but his willingness to take private experience seriously without insisting on one creed still feels unusually generous.
