- A man wakes up in a future England where work feels like pleasure and the Thames runs clean, then spends the book rowing upriver and asking questions. Short on plot, generous with conversation, and oddly restful; read it when you want to argue gently with a dream.
- Fair warning, Morris writes in deliberately old-fashioned prose that keeps breaking into verse, so it asks patience. But Thiodolf's choice, between a charmed hauberk that saves his life and the good of his folk, has real weight, and you can feel Tolkien taking notes.
- You settle into its deliberately archaic, saga-like rhythm and find real warmth in Burgdale’s feasts, work, loyalties, and quarrels. Face-of-god and Hall-Sun make a tender center, though Morris lingers over landscape and custom, so it suits you when you want an old tale told slowly.
- You settle into Morris’s old-fashioned, dreamlike rhythm and follow Osberne Wulfgrimsson and Elfhild through a world of feuds, forests, and perilous journeys. It takes patience, but the strange landscape and earnest, hard-won romance reward you if you enjoy fantasy that feels more like a sung legend than a modern novel.
- You get a strange, beautiful old-fashioned romance in Birdalone, who leaves her lonely forest life and crosses enchanted islands among witches, lovers, and peril. The language takes patience, but if you enjoy richly embroidered storytelling and quests that feel like half-remembered dreams, its oddness grows on you.
- Ralph of Upmeads just rides out of his father's tiny kingdom because he's restless, and the road unspools forever from there. If you can settle into Morris's deliberately old-fashioned prose (it takes a chapter or two), it becomes hypnotic, like fantasy before the genre existed.
- If you can settle into Morris's deliberately old-fashioned prose (it reads like a medieval romance on purpose), this is a strange, dreamy thing: Walter fleeing a bad marriage, haunted by visions of a Lady and a Maid before he ever meets them. Slow, but it casts a real spell.
