Zane Grey

- Grey wrote this about his own great-great-aunt, and you can feel him leaning into the family legend, especially Betty's dash through open ground for gunpowder during the siege. The romance creaks a little (it's his first book), but if frontier Ohio Valley stuff appeals, Wetzel the scout alone earns your evening.
- You’ll like the stark Utah setting and the way Jane Withersteen’s decency collides with a whole community’s religious power. Lassiter brings a dangerous, almost mythic edge, while Venters and Bess give the story its tenderness.
