- You get a wonderfully scruffy blend of sailors’ gossip, moralizing, and adventure, with Blackbeard staging his terrifying entrance and Anne Bonny and Mary Read refusing the roles assigned to them. It’s episodic and sometimes doubtful, but the odd details make it feel like overhearing history in a dockside tavern.
- You follow a London saddler through the plague of 1665, counting the weekly death bills, watching houses get shut up, hearing the dead-cart in the street, and it feels unnervingly like reportage, not fiction. No real plot, so come for the eerie, patient detail.
- Read it for the slow turn from silly to savage: it starts with Gulliver tied down by six-inch politicians and ends with him preferring horses to people, and Swift makes that trajectory feel weirdly reasonable. Funnier and meaner than you expect, though the fourth voyage leaves a bruise.
- Moll narrates her own crimes and marriages like a shopkeeper doing inventory, and her total lack of shame becomes weirdly endearing. The prose runs on without chapter breaks and can feel like one long confession, but if you like a shrewd, unsentimental survivor, she's good company.
