- The sentences alone are worth it, long baroque things that wander and land. You get his hungry teenage years on the London streets with poor Ann, then the dreams turn strange and terrifying.
- You get a witty, melancholy verse novel where Onegin’s cool detachment keeps colliding with Tatyana’s earnestness, while Pushkin’s narrator chats about everything from duels to country life. The story is compact, playful, and quietly painful, though its social wit rewards a little patience if poetry in translation isn’t your usual thing.
- Hoffmann at his oddest, and that's saying something: a shy recluse who buys himself Christmas gifts gets tangled up with the king of the fleas, feuding microscope-wizards, and a lens that shows him what people are really thinking. Go in loose; logic isn't the point, the giddy strangeness is.
- You read it for the feverish, maze-like storytelling, as Melmoth turns up in Stanton’s tale and in the strange histories of Immalee and Monçada. It’s long-winded, grim, and often wonderfully excessive, best suited to a patient reader who enjoys gothic dread more than tidy plotting.
- Small domestic battles: marriages curdling over money, a wife walled up with her secret in La Grande Breteche, all logged with Balzac's terrifying bookkeeping of the heart. A painless door into the Comedie Humaine, one drawing room at a time.
- Hazlitt just sits you down and thinks out loud, about walking alone, watching a juggler, why we hate people we've stopped agreeing with, and he's grumpier and more alive than most modern essayists. Dip in anywhere; it reads best a few essays at a time, not straight through.
- Fair warning, it starts slow and stays sad, but watching Lionel Verney lose the whole world one friend at a time is quietly devastating, and Adrian and Raymond are really Shelley grieving Percy and Byron on the page. Read it when you want company in loneliness, not escape.
- Fair warning, Cooper's sentences take the scenic route, but once Hawkeye and Uncas are tracking through the forest with Magua one step ahead, the old-fashioned prose stops mattering. If you can settle into its pace, the wilderness itself becomes the best character.
- Robert Wringhim gets told he's predestined for heaven no matter what he does, then a stranger called Gil-Martin starts agreeing with him, and it gets very dark from there. If you like unreliable narrators and slow religious dread, this Scottish oddity from 1824 will unsettle you properly.
